The song opens the fireworks show “Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams,” in the Magic Kingdom theme park of Walt Disney World, enchanting guests with its glitter display. The first time I watched it, I was a 20-year college student, unsure of my next steps and if I was heading in the right direction.
The combination of the melodies, narration, and choreographed fireworks and lights created a shift in me on a cellular level and changed my approach to what’s possible for me. It once again gave me a sense of childlike hope.
Jiminy Cricket opens the show by addressing the skeptics:
“I’ll bet a lot of you folks don’t believe that, about a wish coming true, do ya? Well I didn’t either. Course, I’m just a cricket, but lemme tell you what made me change my mind. You see, the most fantastic, magical things can happen, and it all starts with a wish!”
Logically, these words may sound naïve and childish. If you’re hung up on what’s being said, try instead to focus on how they make you feel. Wishing is a heart-centered practice, requiring us to go within and tap into that pure part of our being that existed when we were kids.
The totem of wishes still holds strong in Disney’s culture. Last year, the studio released the animated film “Wish,” which explores the power of wishes and celebrates the heritage and legacy of characters dreaming big as they wish upon stars.
This lavish theatrical musical features a bright and spunky, idealistic heroine named Asha, who learned from her late father that a wish is something you make upon a star and then carry it around with you. While the motive is to get audiences to dream along with Asha, the tale has a caveat.
‘Wishes’ producer Peter Del Vecho explains that making a wish is not enough, and we must work hard to make it come true, just like Walt Disney did with his big dream in the entertainment industry.
“He wanted to bring hope to the world. It wasn’t always easy for him. He had to really work hard to make his dream come true. And I think that’s something we’re celebrating in this movie,” Velcho said in an interview.
“You can’t just simply make a wish. You actually have to work the wish. You have to make it known what your wish is so that others can help you, but really it’s you… [you] have to work hard to make it come true yourself.”

Hi Seline. I’ve never put much thought or value into ‘wishful thinking’ or ‘hoping for the best’ to be honest. But there are a lot of points here and a lot to think about. I am not sure if I am going to change how I think about it personally, but I can kinda see why others might out some value into the idea of wishes and hoping and dreaming for something better.
